![]() ![]() Largely a tale of survival and adventure, the crew face giant octopuses, face-hugger-esque tentacled creatures (as depicted on Ahab’s album cover), slug-like invaders, as well as the more predictable onslaught of fierce storms and generally harsh living conditions. Beginning in media res, the Glen Carrig and crew are lost, shipwrecked in an unnamed “land of lonesomeness” in the year 1757, their story narrated in first-person by passenger John Winterstraw. The book’s main effect is certainly that of Weird horror, through a gradual accretion of unsettlingly strange sights, sounds and occurrences, with all out terror and abjection kept to a minimum. Hodgson’s work is a rare example of that slippery beast, the Weird novel, a form often maligned for the short story. ![]() In the following post, Weird Metal Blog provides a double review – technically with spoilers – comparing both versions. The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” is a novel written by William Hope Hodgson in 1907, which also provided the concept for German funeral doom metal band Ahab’s eponymous fourth album released in 2015. ![]() ![]() This review has been corrected a previous version listed an incorrect agent. Celia’s friends believe she’s merely clearing out the house so she can go on an adventure. But her vibrant, identical twin sister, Celia, is dying from brain cancer and wants to keep the news a secret for now, so Sawyer reluctantly agrees to masquerade as Celia and to pack up her rented bungalow. The Ocean Beach section of San Diego has a laid-back, hippie vibe that doesn’t fit Sawyer’s cautious personality. ![]() Imperfect people overcome real emotional obstacles to build a future in this uplifting contemporary. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s why we’ll blindly espouse a viewpoint we don’t necessarily believe in so that we blend in with the group. It’s why we all too often chase the familiar trappings of money, fame, and success that leave us feeling empty even when we do achieve them. We are so profoundly social that when we are incongruent with the group that we do lasting damage to our self-worth, diminish our well-being and never realize our full potential. From toilet paper shortages to kidneys that get thrown away rather than used for desperately needed organ transplants, from racial segregation to the perceived “electability” of women for political office, from bottled water to “cancel culture,” we routinely copy others, lie about what we believe, cling to tribes, and silence others. A complicated set of illusions driven by conformity bias distorts how we see the world around us. Todd Rose believes that as human beings we continually act against our own best interests out of our brains’ misunderstanding of what we think others believe. The desire to fit in is one of the most powerful, least understood forces in a society. ![]() Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience, behavioral economic, and social psychology research, acclaimed author, former Harvard professor, and think tank founder Todd Rose reveals how so much of our thinking about each other is informed by false assumptions that drive bad decisions that make us dangerously mistrustful as a society and hopelessly unhappy as individuals. ![]() ![]() Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of prewar English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education, and youthful writing career.Īn acknowledged master of English prose, Wodehouse has been admired both by contemporaries such as Hilaire Belloc, Evelyn Waugh and Rudyard Kipling and by more recent writers such as Douglas Adams, Salman Rushdie and Terry Pratchett. ![]() ![]() Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, KBE, was a comic writer who enjoyed enormous popular success during a career of more than seventy years and continues to be widely read over 40 years after his death. ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether you're new to watercolor or have been practicing for years, these colorful designs are perfect for a relaxing afternoon alone or as an activity for the whole family. Indeed, this points up a contradiction in NOAD's characterization, since it defines "chick flick" this way: My wife and her friends, for example, use those terms enthusiastically and without reservation. ![]() Then think of terms like "chick flicks" and "chick lit" - men may use them to express their disaffection with such subjects, but women equally embrace them. And if you've ever seen the group (which sings songs like "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"), you realize they're not making the same kind of statement with their name as, say, the rap group N.W.A. Presumably they would have refused to convert chicken to chick if they felt it disrespected women.
